Levensnevel


Je staart zwijgend naar buiten,
je gelaat getekend door de jaren van het leven.
De witte wereld buiten nog maagdelijk.
Tegen de ruit even een waas van adem,
in je staalblauwe ogen geen blijk van herkenning.
Ik sta hier - je kind - nog altijd je kind
maar jij geen ouder meer - enkel oud, steeds ouder.

Kom maar mama, dan kleed ik je warm aan
met een jas, een das, een muts en wollen wanten.
Laten we naar buiten gaan - wandelen,
het is er zo mooi, zo licht.

Ja, ik houd je hand vast.
Ja, we gaan even langs de hertjes;
we nemen wat brood mee, want je mag ze voeren
en daarna drinken we warme chocomel met slagroom.
Kom maar mama, je mag met me mee.

Wie ik ben, vraag je - of je mij kent.
Ja mama, je kent me.
Kom maar hier. Ga met me mee naar buiten,
dan zal ik je vertellen over vroeger;
toen ik nog jouw kind was en jij - gewoon - mijn ouder.

This is a tiny piece of a larger story I'm writing. A memory of one of the main characters. She was playing with matches. He'd left them carelessly lying about. Like he always did. He cared for nothing but his booze and his smokes. He'd been gone for a long time already. She knew that when he came back he would stink. She wrinkled her nose at the thought of that. She looked at the clock that was hanging on the wall and tried to concentrate. The two hands of time stood very close together on the bottom side of the clock, to the left. She started to be nervous.
