Fifty Shades of Grey

Romantic, liberating and totally addictive, `Fifty Shades of Grey` is a novel that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever. When literature student Anastasia Steele interviews successful entrepreneur Christian Grey, she finds him very attractive and deeply intimidating. Convinced that their meeting went badly, she tries to put him out of her mind - until he turns up at the store where she works part-time, and invites her out.

Unworldly and innocent, Ana is shocked to find she wants this man. And, when he warns her to keep her distance, it only makes her want him more.

But Grey is tormented by inner demons, and consumed by the need to control. As they embark on a passionate love affair, Ana discovers more about her own desires, as well as the dark secrets Grey keeps hidden away from public view...

Fifty Shades Darker

Daunted by the singular tastes and dark secrets of the beautiful, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a Seattle publishing house.

But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, she cannot resist. Soon she is learning more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven and demanding Fifty Shades than she ever thought possible.

But while Grey wrestles with his inner demons, Ana must make the most important decision of her life.

A decision she can only make herself.

Fifty Shades Freed

When Ana Steele first encountered the driven, damaged entrepreneur Christian Grey, it sparked a sensual affair that changed both their lives irrevocably.

Ana always knew that loving her Fifty Shades would not be easy, and being together poses challenges neither of them had anticipated. Ana must learn to share Grey's opulent lifestyle without sacrificing her own integrity or independence; and Grey must overcome his compulsion to control and lay to rest the horrors that still haunt him.

Now, finally together, they have love, passion, intimacy, wealth, and a world of infinite possibilities.

But just when it seems that they really do have it all, tragedy and fate combine to make Ana's worst nightmares come true...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I came across Fifty Shades of Grey during a BookCrossing meeting, I thought, well why not. I'd heard much about the "mommy-porn" trilogy, mostly bad... that I wanted to find out for myself. A big plus was that since these books were written in the English language, I had a chance to read the first one in the original language. I like that best (with English books that is).

So, what experience did I have... Well, I bought the other two books in a second-hand shop to add to the BookCrossing-book so it can travel as a trilogy for those who are curious about them as well. I think that says that I at least liked them enough to do that.

There are a lot of things that irritated me and a lot of things I liked. To cut to the chase, I liked the story about two people who, despite their troubles/insecurities, find themselves to fall in love. I liked some of the "kinky fuckery," but only some. What I dearly loved were the email-conversations between Ana and Christian. They were really funny; context and signatures. They had me giggling and laughing.

What were the other things I liked:
- the recurring sentence (in variations): "Fair point, well made, Miss Steele."
- "My palm is twitching."
- "Stow your twitching palm, Mr. Grey."
- she was radiating thermonuclear (haha, I'd like to see that!)
- the threat Christian makes on p. 31 of Fifty Shades Darker: "So help me God..", and the internal reaction Ana gives: "Keep your hair on Mr. Grey."

What I disliked:
- the fact she always immediately comes after his sentence: "Come for me baby.." Yeah right.
- just-fucked hair. I mean really... Just out of bed hair, I can relate to in some matter.
- her completely, utterly annoying Inner Goddess & Subconscious. If I ever hear or come across them, I will kill them. And by that I mean: bloody murder.
- his impressive lenght. Sigh, we get the picture after the first (maybe two) time(s).
- a lot of the sex-scenes.

Let me explain that last remark. In my own opinion, these books would be a lot better, with much less sex / "kinky fuckery" in them. And I know that's what made them controversial and why the sales went through the roof. But I really feel that in potential, these books could be a great read, even with some "kinky fuckery" in them, but with a real story to tell. The dark history, the love-story, the complications: they are interesting. But they are almost fully overshadowed by all the sex, the completely boring sex after the first three, maybe four times... All the sex takes away the essence of the story, but then again, if the essence of the story is all the sex... and the story itself doesn't matter... well these weren't the books I would read.

I think this sums it up quite nicely. Will I be spanked now by Mr. Grey? [Rolling my eyes]

Rafoefel zei…
Okay, I was wondering whether to try reading Fifty Shades, while normally I never read 'fashionably popular' books... After reading your review however, I'm sure I will refrain from reading them altogether.
Probably these series of books were given this much attention by the American public, because they aren't used to much sex in movies or books alike... I also gather that many of these sex scenes are similar and some even unrealistic...
So: thank you for your honest and insightful review!

Boeklancering 23x Zwart Licht

Mijn verhaal heet 'Engelenstem'.

"Blanco. Ze staarde wezenloos voor zich uit. Alles was blanco.

How far would you go

how far would you walk with me my friend
all the way through the swamp of sadness
where despair seeps into your veins
leaving your limbs as heavy as stone
how far would you walk with me my friend
how far would you walk with me my friend
all the way over the mountains of dread
where the fear claws at your feet
and the paths are as treacherous as thieves
how far would you walk with me my friend
how far would you walk with me my friend
all the way through the valley of pain
where the roads are as sharp as razors
and the rivers run with blood
how far would you walk with me my friend
how far would you walk with me my friend
All the way to the ends of the earth
where the emptiness is as vast
as the hole in my heart
how far would you walk with me my friend
how far would you go

Dagvlinder

Haar armpjes over elkaar heengeslagen.
Afgelopen jaren was het begin me…
